Internship... Do we really have to do it? Hey, what's with that tone? Internship is your chance to experience real life as a career person! You should grasp every opportunity during your internship period. Don't waste the chance.

Don't be afraid, nobody is perfect and you should give yourself some time to learn and adapt with the situation. But remember not to repeat the same mistakes. Even though you're allowed to make mistakes, but please never ever do these 7:

1. Not taking your internship seriously

Interning must be treated like a real job! Yes, you're an intern and perhaps you have to do boring tasks such as research, compiling files, arranging a meeting, helping your boss photocopy documents... but you should do all these tasks sincerely! Your role in the office may be temporary but you still have to prove that you can perform like a regular staff.

2. "I can do it myself."

This is not a battle to prove that you can do work without help. If you want to learn new things, go ahead and ask your colleagues in the office. Don't expect to be spoon-fed. You have to work for the knowledge!

3. Not trying to adapt to the company culture.

Internship is a totally new experience for you. Have you heard the saying, "Do what the Romans do in Rome?" Yes, you should embrace it wholly and pay attention to how people act in the office, and how things work there. Your colleagues don't enjoy playing songs out loud? So what should you do? Don't do it, of course!

4. Being anti-social.

Come on guys, not making any friends is such a waste. Why do you have to hide in that small cubicle from 9 to 5 every day? Go out and mingle with everyone! You're making a mistake if a colleague has to ask "I can't remember that intern. What's the fella's name?"

5. Not bothering to get feedback.

How else will you know if you're doing well at work or not? You should get feedback from your supervisor or manager. Don't be afraid to ask for feedback after you have completed a task. Ask if you're doing it correctly and seek for any opinion.

6. Is it hard to say 'thank you'?

Train yourself to say 'thank you' to anyone for helping you. Even if it's just a small favour, you should always thank them as they have spent their time, energy and effort to help you. Make everyone feel appreciated.

7. "This is not my job."

Yes, you're hired to join the accounting team but that doesn't mean you should just stick to the same routine of that department! You should step out from your comfort zone and learn more about how other departments in the office work. It's not a waste to learn new things and gain more experience!
