The time has finally come, the day when the recruiter will inform if you've got the job. You are worried and excited at the same time to hear the result. This is the job that you've been looking for! Suddenly the recruiter calls you and says they've chosen another candidate. Wait, what?

The majority of job seekers would immediately forget about it and move on to the next job application. Hey, not so fast! You don't get the position that you want but remember: when one door closes another door opens. Plus, it's a chance to learn about yourself and get to know why it's not you who got the job offer. Relax and calm down, take these four steps to turn your disappointing situation around:

1. Take time to reflect

Give a few days to embrace the situation and after a few days have passed, try to step back and analyze it. Why were you not right for the position? Were there any particular qualifications or skill sets that they desire? Think back about your interview session. Did you do well? What can you do to be better next time? Was there any question that you can't answer? Maybe your resume or your communication skill?

It takes time to recap and reflect on all the mistakes. But it's helpful to know and learn from it. This way you can improve yourself and apply the knowledge to future interviews.

2. What did I do wrong?

It's uncommon for an interviewer to tell you directly why you didn't get the job but that doesn't mean it's impossible. You can do so by connecting with the interviewer right after the interview session and ask for specific reasons why you weren't chosen. Perhaps you need to expand your skill set, or maybe improve on your interviewing skill or maybe the interviewer really liked you, but just didn't think the position was the right fit.

3. Don't cut ties

Yes, you were rejected and even though you might not want to think about them ever again, you should send a follow-up email to your interviewers approximately 2-3 weeks after your interview. Thank them for the opportunity and also acknowledge them that you're interested for any future openings. This lets the employer know that there are no hard feelings and you're are still being professional.
