Many job seekers don't know what should and shouldn't be included in their first resume. You don't have anything prominent to 'sell' yourself and with zero work experience, how will you catch the recruiter's attention?

Alright, there are no rigid rules when it comes to writing a resume because it really does depend on what kind of context you have. Some might say, the most important things to consider are your goals and your audience. But you must ask yourself, is it true? This person uses the same font type throughout the document. She made the heading bold and used bigger font size to differentiate it but the font is still the same. Dates and locations are consistently represented, thus making it easy for the recruiter to pick out important information.

2. Hyperlink the profile's link

This is something that you should do in your resume immediately. Don't just insert the link, but hyperlink it. The recruiter just needs to click on that link and it's very efficient rather than they have to copy the link and open a new tab to search manually. 

3. The goals are clear 

Maria's put a title and the objective at the top of the resume that clearly indicates her interest, which is to secure an internship in advertising or public relations. The recruiter doesn't have to guess and try to comprehend the reason this person send the resume by reading the education background section. 

4. She surely has the selling points 

We have to agree that Maria doesn't have any relevant work experience to speak of. Hold on, the recruiter won't ditch your resume immediately! Instead, they'll shift to other components in the resume which are the strengths, the relevant coursework, leadership activities, achievements, and skills. All these demonstrate someone's work ethic and skills. 

5. Insert the university's references 

It's not a crime to incorporate some information about your university. You may include any awards, honours, or scholarships you received.

6. It lists her social media skills. 

The younger generation grew up with Facebook and other social media channels, and you may think it's silly to add these to your resume right? The reality is that this knowledge is an asset to many employers and not everyone in the job market possesses it. 

If you're targeting internship opportunities in marketing, public relations, advertising, journalism, or even customer service, then consider including these skills in your resume. 

7. It doesn’t include a list of references

Last advice, never ever put a line at the bottom that reads "References available upon request." Don't waste a space just to write this information. Recruiter won't ask for the references until you make it to a face-to-face interview and they're 100% know that you'll provide it if they request it.
